Jess, 17:12 on today’s wod.
I’ve seen a lot of torn up hands lately and so I just want to address a couple things regarding tears and maintenance. I smell a video coming on addressing the how-to-make a grip out of athletic tape, but you’ll have to wait for that. ( I have been told that it makes you feel a little special when I personally make a wrap for you mid-workout.) If you are one of those people who tear constantly, it might be that your hands are still a bit soft and haven’t built up enough calluses and tissue tolerance, and it could also be something about the way you are gripping the bar/barbell (we can address those issue one on one).
Either way, tearing sucks, but if you do, the first thing you want to do is clean it and salt it if it’s a deep one. Once you get home you’ll want to trim any excess flaps of skin. For the next few days keep it clean and moisturized, water can dry out the hands also causing cracking, no bueno for a healing tear.
Calluses are good, but too much of a good thing can mean a bloody mess. Raised calluses stick to the bar and when there is too much friction between it and whatever you’re holding on to, that callus will rip right off.
You’ll want to perform some routine maintenance to keep the tears to a minimum. My favorite tool is a sharp set of tweezerman cuticle trimmers. I can cut the calluses down in no time. Other people prefer small scissors, pumice stone, dremel, even razor blades work. This is great to do in the shower when the skin is soft and raised and easy to remove.
An ounce of prevention goes a long way here, so keep those hands happy!
