Getting hit by a car changed my life.  If you don’t know the story, I was driving home on PCH on my Vespa and someone pulled a U-turn right in front of me.  I didn’t even have time to put on the brakes, I hit them at 65mph and all I remember was a flash of white and  waking up on the pavement with people surrounding me.  I was lucky.  I walked away with a dislocated hip and was off crutches in two weeks.  I still have hip and knee issues from the incident, but so what, I’m alive!  My training took on a different meaning after that day.  I had this thought in the back of my mind…You never know when you’ll get hit by a fucking car!

I am reminded of this story because one of my best friends told me that he has testicular cancer today.

  (I know!  He was hit by the proverbial fucking car!)  His name is David, aka Hollywood, and he is a 32 year old kiteboard instructor, sailor and musician that I used to live with in St Thomas.  He is one of the nicest people I have ever met and he doesn’t deserve this, but it is still happening.  I am once again reminded that we must live our lives with the knowledge that everything could change in an instant.  We spoke after his first session of chemotherapy and he is staying as positive as always.  We made a few Lance Armstrong jokes and I told him to buy a cool beanie for his soon to be bald head.  I have faith that he will make it through this ordeal because of his attitude and his fitness.

  I’m not tyring to be a downer, but rather the exact opposite!  Many of us forget how beautiful it is to be healthy and capable until it is taken away.  So get out there and take advantage of your health now!  Train hard!  Train for the worst case scenario!  Train because it feels great to be alive!  Train to get more out of life!  Train because you never know when you’ll get hit by a fucking car!
