The CrossFit Diet: How to Fuel for Success

The CrossFit pyramid is often used to explain the foundations that are necessary to build on to achieve the results you want. Not surprisingly, the base of this pyramid is nutrition. Without proper nutrition, you’ll never be able to achieve your fitness goals. It’s one of the main reasons why we tell folks at Paradiso CrossFit that “everything is everything.” Your CrossFit diet is important!

Even though we all know how important good nutrition is, it’s easy to allow our diets to get out of control. Take a few moments today and consider these quick tips to help you have the best CrossFit diet possible.

Shop “around” at the grocery store

One of the simplest ways to have a better CrossFit diet is to shop around the interior walls of the grocery store. Why is that? Because most of your fresh foods are found there: meats, dairy, fruits, and vegetables. By comparison, what do you often find in the aisles of the store? Processed food with unpronounceable ingredients listed on the label. If you want to have the best CrossFit diet, this is a great place to start.

Be aware of your macros

Macros are the building blocks of good nutrition, and as such, your CrossFit diet must contain them in proper proportions. What are macros?

  • Protein: They help build muscle mass. Meats, dairy products, and nuts are excellent sources of protein.
  • Fats: Although it may seem that cutting out all fat would be a good idea, instead you need to utilize “good fats.” Olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, and eggs are fantastic choices.
  • Carbs: Much has been made about being “low carb” over the past few years, but carbs are necessary for energy. Utilize whole grains for your best carb intake.

Drink plenty of water

When you think of nutrition, you’re probably thinking of food. However, your intake of water is vital to your success.

Not only does drinking water keep you hydrated, it also flushes out harmful toxins from your body.

Drink water with every meal and make sure you properly hydrate before and after your WOD. Recommendations for how much water you should drink will vary by your sex and weight, but make sure that however much you drink, you drink consistently throughout the day.

Don’t skip breakfast

The common temptation for a CrossFit diet is to skip breakfast, but your mom really was right when she told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Instead of grabbing a sugary doughnut on the way to your WOD, prep your breakfast choice the night before.

Grabbing some eggs, a protein shake, or a Greek yogurt are all better choices than a muffin from your favorite coffee shop.
