The past couple weeks have been a roller coaster of events and I haven’t had a chance to talk about myself at all! I wanted to address something I’ve had many individual conversations about, and something that many of you may take personally. I want to say publicly that I do not hate football. I have absolutely nothing against the sport. It is actually one of the sports I enjoy watching! I have no team affiliations, although I grew up a NY Giants fan during the Phil Simms, Lawrence Taylor era, and I have a soft spot in my heart for the Bears because I like to think about how happy it makes my buddies back home when they win, even better when a team makes it into the playoffs or the Finals! I love to see how an entire city can be united around a single event. There is, of course, a large BUT to all of this…

The question for me comes down to priority. The topic is not just football, but baseball, basketball, the olympics, the world cup, the list goes on and the seasons blend into one another for a never ending distraction, we could just call it television. I do enjoy watching sports, but I would much rather be playing them! The first time I pondered the thought was while watching the movie Gladiator, in which, there is a struggle for control of the government between the Senate and Joaquin Phoenix. A couple dudes from the Senate are talking about the new Emperor’s (Joaquin Phoenix) decision to put on 100 days of sport and entertainment, namely staged battles and gladiator demonstrations.

They are discussing how smart he is, in that he knows how to control the masses. Hmmm, what an interesting way to put it! My buddy once said, “I’ve watched every single Cubs game this season, and the ones I couldn’t watch, I listened to on the radio.” I wasn’t sure of the exact number, but I knew there were a LOT of games in a season, and all I could think to myself was how many hours of his life that had taken up!

He could have learned to play the piano or written a play! We are talking about choice and opportunity. I have chosen to pursue other passions. I chose to get rid of my television because it loved me too much. I do not judge anyone for their choices, but I do encourage them to follow their dreams, continually improve and educate themselves. Screw everything else that gets in the way!
