One of the best CrossFit athletes, Josh Everett, was talking about himself as someone who is not a “natural athlete.” We have all heard this term before, but it was only recently that I heard an actual description of this phenomenon. A “natural athlete” is someone that learns by watching. After years of coaching, I must say this is a pretty accurate statement. The other side of the aisle is where Josh Everett sits.
He says he learns through repetition. I just loved his total acceptance of this fact and that it didn’t deter him from becoming a total badass! What we do in our gym everyday is athletic training and for those that are not natural athletes, entering into this realm can be both humbling and frustrating; but it is not the be all end all! Still study others movement, video tape yourself and watch how you move, watch elite level athletes performing, and then practice, practice, practice!
We have been focusing on running mechanics and drills for the past 5 days and whether you like it or not, you are all better runners now! We are building neural pathways!
Check out the best of the best in slow motion, watch his feet and read this nerdy post about sprinting mechanics. I loved this line from the post that carries over to everything we do:
As remarkable as Usain Bolt’s performances were, they still fit the fundamental technical model of sprinting — albeit with a different result. It’s a lesson in the law of incremental effects: Small differences, when repeated consistently, can add up to big margins of victory.
