I’m asked a lot about what the names spray painted on the walls represent. I explain that they are names of benchmark workouts we do periodically to measure one’s progress. I explain that we don’t repeat things very often but that these workouts represent specific “indicators” in one’s fitness and that they all have the unique ability to devastate, much like a hurricane (hence the female names). They all are unique in their expression of “increased work capacity over broad time and modal domains”. And if they are really new to crossfit, I just tell them they are really f’ in hard workouts. I know some of you write workout times in a journal (maybe just the benchmarks), and I know some of you don’t. We type at the bottom of every workout “post time to comments” and very few do.
I have kept a workout journal for the last 4 years. And it’s been fascinating to go back and read the stuff I wrote down.
I was anal about it, writing down everything from what the warm up was, what time of day it was, what I felt like during the wod, if I felt “off” and trying to figure out why, what I ate and drank, injuries, scaling, you name it. The point is, sometimes we need to look back to appreciate how far we’ve come. The other point is we want to know what your work capacity is, has it increased or decreased and if you can do more faster. Pardon the cliche, but you have to know where you’ve come from to know where you’re going. Or something like that. It’s a valuable tool that isn’t utilized nearly enough. What method, if any, do you use to record progress?
