What was supposed to be a relaxing, uneventful, multi-day escape in Arizona with my buddy quickly became a nonstop, action packed, tour-de-force roller coaster ride the likes of which I haven’t experienced since high school.  Caravanning from Arizona to San Diego, our ’79 Bronco blew out in the middle of the freaking road.  I got out and stood frozen, transfixed.  It was cold, the sun was setting in a violent red and purple spread across the vast sky, and the howling wind was perfect with the endless 360 degrees of absolute nothingness that is the 8 Freeway.  We were stuck, and I couldn’t have been happier.  In that moment I remembered a time too long ago when I would have given anything for the unpredictability and excitement of getting stranded in a strange place far from home.  A time when wanderlust and adventure were the rule, and routine and scheduling were the exception.  How long ago has it been since then?  And why am I so f#cking happy about this?

“Zeb!  You alright?”  My buddy shouted from the car behind me, snapping me out of my reverie.  And so began our honest to goodness, straight out of a movie adventure.  We pushed and hauled the Bronco and heavy trailers, dejected and waited for the tow, left her at El Centro, drove 2 hours back to San Diego, slept and ate, drove back to El Centro, pushed and hauled the Bronco up (with some help from the locals) on an equally enormous trailer, prayed our Toyota 4Runner was up to the task, drove back to San Diego, ‘dropped’ off our baby monster truck on the driveway, returned the trailer, and raced to the Amtrak station downtown to make my 4pm train, barely arriving on time, laughing, reminiscing, and having fun the entire 2 days.  This was all after shooting, light off roading, and pushing around ATVs in Lake Havasu.

One of the points I’m trying to make is, despite a recovering shoulder and a tight back, I was still able to keep up with the heavy action.  And it’s all because of CrossFit.  Not just baseline strength and conditioning, but also knowing how to breathe and hold it, body awareness, midline stabilization, etc.  Diso always stresses the point of using the fitness you gain here toward worldly ends.  This is what he was talking about!  Also, I was amazed that these types of things (living and not knowing what the next second will bring) are FUN!

The train ride back was my first ever train ride, the sun was setting along the sea this time, and my mind was drifting home.  ‘Gym time’ is different than normal time, and being gone for 5 days might as well have been 5 months.  I miss my gym.  I miss my people.  Happy New Year PCF.  I can’t wait to see what we’ll accomplish in 2011, and I can’t wait to do it with all of you, my beloved Paradiso CrossFit family.

Share with us, if you would, some of your adventures.
